The Toyota Mirai was the first fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) sold in significant quantities to consumers. It arrived for the 2016 model year as an awkward-looking but forward-thinking sedan with seating for four people. The Mirai runs on hydrogen fuel, and a fuel cell stack converts the hydrogen into electricity and water vapor. The electricity powers the car while the water vapor exits the exhaust outlet. A redesigned Mirai arrived for the 2021 model year, offering dramatically improved styling, technology, and packaging. Unfortunately, if you want to own this futuristic car, you’ll need to live in California or Honolulu, Hawaii, due to limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
