Hyundai has been making the Sonata since the late 1980s. A hybrid version became available when the automaker redesigned the midsize sedan for the 2011 model year. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid made 206 horsepower, enough for reasonably quick acceleration. Fuel economy was 36 mpg, according to the EPA. Due to intrusion from the battery pack, it had less trunk space than gas-only models, shrinking to 10.1 cu-ft compared to the standard Sonata's 16.4. Hyundai redesigned the Sonata Hybrid in 2016. Fuel economy improved to an EPA-rated 41 mpg, and trunk space increased to 13.3 cu-ft. Also, a plug-in hybrid joined the range.
