The Chevrolet Cruze arrived for the 2011 model year with claims from the automaker that it offered the space of a midsize car with the fuel economy of a compact car. In its turbocharged Eco trim level, the Cruze had a fuel-economy rating of more than 40 mpg on the highway. A diesel engine arrived in 2014, returning more than 45 mpg on the highway. A redesigned Chevrolet Cruze went on sale for the 2016 model year, and a hatchback became part of the lineup for the 2017 model year. The diesel engine option also returned, rated to get up to 52 mpg on the highway with its manual transmission. However, in 2019, Chevrolet canceled the Cruze and closed the Lordstown, Ohio, factory where the car had been built.
